Tensions are high following the release of body camera footage that shows the moment 36-year-old Cameron Hunt was shot by a Douglas County deputy. Hunt, involved in a vehicular incident in November 2023, was pursued initially for speeding down I-20 before his capture ended in gunfire, as reported by Atlanta News First.
According to the GBI's account, deputies attempted to make a traffic stop on the interstate around 12:45 a.m., causing Hunt to lose control of his SUV and overturn it. The GBI also mentioned that Hunt's hand motions led one deputy to shoot him. However, the attorney's perspective, as noted by WSB-TV, depicts a scene of confusion and questionable use of force.
"Not safely driving, but certainly not in a way where he deserved to be shot," Graham Scofield, Hunt's attorney, told Atlanta News First. Scofield suggested that the confrontation was not a result of a high-speed chase and raised concerns about the deputy's actions, especially given a senior officer's immediate reaction at the scene questioning the deputy's decision to fire his weapon.
Further complicating the outcome, Hunt now faces charges while still dealing with the physical and emotional aftermath of the incident. "The bullet went through his chest. To this day it's lodged within an inch of his heart," Scofield explained. His client's case, steeped in themes of racial dynamics and authority, raises familiar echoes of wider societal conversations on the use of force by law enforcement. "The white deputy, and an African-American young man that was shot – there are a lot of statistics showing that white police officers to this day are far more prone to use violent force against young Black men," Scofield added, hinting to historic and ongoing tensions, as per Atlanta News First.
As Hunt remains incarcerated, the deputy involved has reportedly kept his position on the force. The Douglas County Sheriff's Office has been contacted for comments but has only provided a terse 'No comment.' The ongoing investigation by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation is expected to lead to a review by the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, with many awaiting the outcome.
