Following a demonstration outside the North Precinct of the Portland Police Bureau (PPB), nine individuals were taken into custody last night. According to the Portland Police Bureau, nearly 50 protestors gathered, leading to instances of vandalism that prompted law enforcement action.

The gathering began around 7:00 p.m. with the demonstrators chanting and making noise. Shortly thereafter, a group segment started tagging the precinct's exterior, including windows and walls that had recently seen a fresh coat of paint. PPB officers, who had been monitoring from a distance, stepped in and arrested several protestors, as the rest momentarily withdrew before returning and continuing their demonstration. The police then established a boundary with tape, later torn down, leading to more arrests as individuals crossed the prohibited space.

In the aftermath, nine people face charges ranging from trespassing to resisting arrest and weapons violations. Among those detained are Darnell Canfield, Jela Cameron, Heather Clark, Emily Fox, Cassidy Kakin, Kendall Killian, Gerald McCorkle Jr., Micah McCullough, and Iysha Lovlee Pineda Macy, their charges respectively outlined in the PPB's statement.

Portland Police Chief Bob Day and Mayor Ted Wheeler responded to the incident, underscoring the balance between First Amendment rights and community safety. "It is possible to exercise your First Amendment rights without committing violence or destroying property," Chief Day stated, as per the Portland Police Bureau, stressing the impact of such actions on local resources and community well-being.
