Tragedy struck at the Rio Grande when a 9-year-old Venezuelan girl was confirmed dead after an attempted crossing turned fatal. The incident occurred yesterday near Del Rio. Alongside a group of immigrants, including a woman claiming to be the child's aunt, the young girl was swept away by the current while the group was attempting to navigate the treacherous river to cross the border illegally, as reported by KENS 5.
The girl, identified by her family as Hanna Victoria, could not be reached by the group including her, said to be her aunt, who was trying to save her from the overpowering waters. Paramedics recovered her body and transferred it to Semefo de Acuña, where an autopsy will be conducted for official identification. This heart-wrenching event has ignited discussions around the perils faced by migrants attempting to make the perilous journey across the border.
Following the recovery, another somber reminder surfaced from earlier in the year, where a similar fate was met by an immigrant girl, her remains also found in the waters of the Rio Grande by the Beta Group of Piedras Negras near Eagle Pass. These incidents add to a growing list of migrant deaths occurring at the border, underlining the urgent need for solutions to prevent such tragedies.
In the wake of these incidents, U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials from the Del Rio Sector announced they will hold a press conference tomorrow as part of their annual Border Safety Initiative. According to statements made, a focus will be cast on preventive measures against undocumented immigrant deaths and the role of Border Patrol in rescue operations when people, like Hanna, are placed in harm's way by treacherous crossings.
