An early morning fire at Rostraver Airport on Wednesday resulted in damage to a privately owned hangar and at least two airplanes, but no injuries were reported. The Westmoreland County dispatch received notice of the incident shortly after 9:40 a.m., as per WPXI.
Inside the hangar, the presence of aircraft fuel posed a significant risk of escalation. However, Gabe Monzo, Westmoreland County Airport Authority executive director stated, as per TribLIVE, "It’s always dangerous because of the type of fuel that the aircraft have on them, but they got a quick stop to it."
The Rostraver Central Fire Chief, Vince Campbell, indicated that firefighters managed to extinguish the fire within about 10 minutes, conquering the flames located in the rear corner of the building. Maintenance crews first observed the smoke that morning. Despite the potential threat, the event did not disrupt the airport's operations as it unfolded off Route 51, near the Allegheny and Westmoreland county border.
The hangar's owner, Hick, is now faced with the loss of his aircraft and the task of rebuilding in the wake of the fire's destruction.
