In a tragic turn of events, a Fourth of July demonstration in Phoenix ended with one man dead from a gunshot wound and another hospitalized due to a stabbing. The deceased has been identified as 51-year-old Paul Franco. The violence broke out around 8:45 p.m. near Central and Minnezona avenues, as reported by FOX 10 Phoenix.
Witnesses and police confirm a disagreement escalated into physical confrontation resulting in Franco's death and, while another individual was stabbed and is currently in the hospital their injuries are said to not be life-threatening, but further details about the identity of the second victim or the specific nature of the altercation have not been publicly disclosed. After the incident, a woman linked to the shooting was taken to Phoenix police headquarters for questioning; she claimed self-defense and was subsequently released, pending a detailed investigation by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office to decide on the filing of charges, as mentioned in the report by FOX 10 Phoenix.
According to a follow-up by Arizona's Family, the shooting happened close to the Fabulous Phoenix Fourth event at Steele Indian School Park, however, authorities have stated the incident was unrelated to the Independence Day celebrations. The site was quickly swarmed by dozens of officers, some in tactical attire, as they secured the perimeter and began the collection of evidence and testimonies.
"Fourth of July is to have fun and everything. A day to have fun but not see people get hurt," Leroy Jones, a nearby resident, expressed his dismay to Arizona's Family, while another neighbor recounted the unexpected shift from celebration to chaos saying "I was in the park watching the fireworks and then because the fireworks was a little bit delayed and when we came back it was a lot of police cars and stuff and we didn’t know what happened," these sentiments echo the community's shock and the sudden sense of unease that has befallen the area in light of recent events.
