
Tragedy struck early Saturday morning near Port Aransas, Texas when a commercial tanker and a small charter boat collided in the Lydia Ann Channel, as reported by FOX San Antonio. One individual lost their life and another is currently missing following the incident which led to the closure of the ship channel, creating an active site for search and rescue operations managed by the U.S. Coast Guard and supported by local authorities and volunteers.
The collision was first reported by a good Samaritan early in the morning, and despite the Coast Guard's exhaustive search covering an area of some 125 square miles, the missing passenger has yet to be found, as detailed by Maritime Executive. The two-day search included air and surface assets and enlisted the help of local boaters alongside state and local first responders from Texas Parks & Wildlife, Aransas Pass Police, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the Port of Corpus Christi's police department the ship channel remained closed during this time to facilitate the operation.
While two survivors were rescued from the waters by a good Samaritan vessel and the pilot boat for Port Aransas, their injuries have not been disclosed at this time. In a somber development on Sunday afternoon, 44 hours after the start of the search, the Coast Guard suspended the search for the missing individual. The identities of those involved in the accident have not been released, nor has the cause of the collision, with an ongoing investigation being conducted.
