An Orange County man was fatally shot by SWAT deputies following a domestic dispute that unfolded Friday evening, which ended in the man taking his own child hostage. According to ClickOrlando, Sheriff John Mina detailed in an early Saturday news conference how the man shot and stabbed the mother of his child, subsequently holding the child hostage for several hours. The injured woman was urgently taken to the hospital for surgery, in critical condition, said Mina.

Armed with a gun, and with the child's welfare at immediate risk, the deputies reached a critical decision following extensive negotiations which failed to bring forth a surrender. Sheriff Mina expressed that they were "in fear for the child’s safety and had to take action." When the man was seen holding a gun and the baby, the SWAT team intervened, resulting in his death, Mina stressed during a statement, as per ClickOrlando. The 3-year-old child was unharmed during the standoff.

Investigation into the incident has been commissioned by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which will forward its findings to the State’s Attorney’s Office, as reported by FOX 35. Subsequent to that, an internal review by the sheriff’s office will ensue. Mina assured the public that body-worn camera footage would be available after 30 days, as detailed by ClickOrlando.
