An Orlando man, Joel David Fonseca Flores, age 42, has been convicted by a federal jury for conspiring to distribute fentanyl that led to a fatal outcome. Fonseca Flores now faces a minimum of two decades to a possible life sentence in federal prison, with a sentencing hearing on the calendar for October 7, as per the announcement made by the U.S Attorney's Office.

The conviction of Fonseca Flores together with Misty Lynn Parady stems from a superseding indictment issued on August 16, 2023, which presented three counts: one accusing the duo of the fatal conspiracy, while counts two and three indict Fonseca Flores individually for assisting in the distribution of fentanyl and cocaine and for having a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking charges, respectively, and on June 3, Fonseca Flores entered a guilty plea for the latter two counts.

During trial proceedings, it came to light that Fonseca Flores and Parady had been engaged in the sale of counterfeit "M30" pills, which contained the powerful synthetic opioid, to the victim known by the initials N.K., masquerading the lethal product as oxycodone which was in reality fentanyl, as evidenced by the transactions that took place from April 2020 through April 2022, as mentioned by th U.S. Attorney's Office.

According to the evidence, N.K. initially believed the purchased pills were oxycodone, but eventually discerned the truth and when on October 31, 2021, N.K. tested positive for fentanyl—a revelation communicated to Parady through text message, who then informed Fonseca Flores, then again on March 31, 2022 N.K. had shared with Parady a drug test image that confirmed the presence of fentanyl instead of oxycodone, as recounted in a U.S. Attorney's Office report.
