An employee of an Arizona golf course tragically lost his life following an attack by a swarm of bees. Rick Messina, a staff member of the El Conquistador Golf's agronomy team at the Oro Valley-based course, succumbed to complications from bee stings three days after the incident, which occurred on June 24. Messina was performing his duties on the Pusch Ridge Course when he encountered the aggressive insects.
Following the attack, El Conquistador Golf announced that it has implemented updated safety protocols and has conducted a thorough inspection of all 45 holes for bee activity. According to ABC15, the golf course has also engaged professional beekeepers to ensure the safety of the golf course environment. "Rick was a dedicated and cherished member of our team, known for his exceptional work ethic, positive attitude, and unwavering commitment to his duties," the golf course management said in a statement. They further elaborated on the profound impact of Messina's loss on the community and expressed condolences to his family and colleagues.
New signage to warn against wildlife and venomous creatures have been put in place at the golf course premises. As reported by AZFamily, the golf course has made it a policy to call a bee removal specialist should a report of bees come in and has added an annual bee safety training for the staff. El Conquistador Golf's general manager expressed their commitment to staff safety in a memorandum that was sent out, detailing the new measures that have been taken.
The tragedy has prompted a general warning for those spending time outdoors in the region, as experts have indicated that summer represents the peak season for bee activity. They advise the public to stay vigilant and avoid interactions with swarms, recommending people to run instead of swatting at bees or attempting to play dead, which are ineffective strategies against bee attacks. This guidance comes on the heels of local concerns surrounding the safety of individuals in outdoor environments, particularly those in occupations that require constant interaction with nature.
