Residents of Pflugerville were given the all-clear to return to their homes on Wednesday night following an afternoon evacuation spurred by a gas leak. The leak, which occurred along Kennemer Drive, prompted a response from City officials and emergency crews to secure the area. In a statement obtained by Austin American Statesman, Pflugerville spokesperson Jessica Taylor communicated that the gas line has been safely shut off, although Kennemer Drive will remain closed while underway repairs are being executed.
The gas leak was initially brought to the public's attention earlier on Wednesday when foot and vehicle traffic were prohibited along Kelly Lane and Kennemer Drive, as per city officials' directives. According to an Austin American Statesman report, the affected stretch—from Mallard Pond Trail to Hanging Rock Drive—lies just east of Texas 130 and north of Kelly Lane. Residents were contacted directly about the evacuation and were notified when they could safely return.
The City of Pflugerville turned to social media to reassure the community that the situation had been handled without incident. "It is now safe for residents to return to their homes," the city announced, following the emergency response measures.
Repair operations will keep a section of the roadway out of commission for the time being despite the lifted evacuation orders. "The emergency crews worked diligently to ensure the area is safe. We appreciate the community's cooperation and patience during this incident," the city was quoted saying in a KXAN article. With the immediate threat dissipated, the focus has now shifted to securing the integrity of the local infrastructure to prevent any future interruptions of this nature.
