Philadelphia has been nurturing an ecosystem of innovation within its municipal structure for over a decade, and the fruits of this labor are set to be showcased at an upcoming event. The Innovation team from the City of Philadelphia has been diligently working since its inception in 2013, to embed the ethos of creativity and problem-solving across various city departments.
According to an announcement on the City's official website, the Innovation Showcase scheduled for July 11 from 2-4pm, aims to bring together City employees to foster networking, share knowledge of the Innovation program, and learn from one another's experiences. If you're a part of the city's workforce, this seems like an opportunity not to be missed, for it is here where innovative seeds have been sown, seeds that have the potential to bloom into efficient governance and impactful service delivery.
The programs outlined—such as The Academy for Municipal Innovation (AMI), The Innovation Fund, and in-house Innovation Consulting—are a testament to the commitment made towards equipping employees with skills of innovation and keeping the gears of government turning in new, efficient ways. The efforts include partnerships with institutions like Thomas Jefferson University and the Philadelphia City Fund, aiming to steer employees towards fresh thinking and inventive approaches.
The headway made by the Innovation team is not to be understated, having "...given out 27 grants to city workers, trained nearly 200 workers through the AMI, and reached 1,500 more through 110 departmental workshops," the City's website reports. Moreover, the upcoming showcase isn't just a reflection of the past but also a launchpad for future initiatives designed to bolster this existing infrastructure of ideation and innovation.
City employees and departments looking for pathways to innovate will have access to an array of supportive measures, including funding for pilot projects that challenge conventional thinking. The City's engagement with such programs is indicative of an administration striving to not just react to change but proactively embrace it. The upcoming initiative, to be announced at the Innovation Showcase, will undoubtedly be the next step in this evolving journey of shaping a government that works smarter and serves better.
