Hernandez was fatally shot during a home invasion near 83rd Avenue and Broadway Road back in 2022, according to ABC15. Her family, particularly her sister Marlene Estrada, is pleading for closure and justice, as no one has been charged in connection with her death despite past arrests.
Estrada, in an emotional interview with ABC15, recounted the pain that has plagued her family since the tragic event. "It's been very difficult for my whole family," she said. "We still haven't had any closure." Estrada spoke to the media outlet for the first time shortly after the incident in 2022, reminiscing about her sister as a "young, very happy girl, full of life." The police, after initially arresting then-18-year-old Jvion Gadson-Scott based on GPS data and evidence at his apartment, are still working on the case after the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office returned it for further investigation.
Gadson-Scott, who police still consider a primary suspect, served time for weapons violations but was released last month, reports ABC15. Currently, authorities are waiting for DNA evidence that might strengthen their case. Sergeant Brian Bower of the Phoenix Police Department emphasized to ABC15 the importance of solidifying their case, "We want to make sure that we have a very solid case."
While the police continued their investigation, Hernandez's family took action by visiting the original crime scene over the weekend, erecting a temporary memorial. Estrada's message to the public, as reported by ABC15, is heartfelt: "Just ask yourself, in our shoes and in our situation, we don't wish this upon anybody. Just please speak up or come forward." The departments’ efforts in seeking assistance from the community include collaborating with Arizona's Silent Witness program, which offers up to $1,000 rewards for tips leading to arrest or indictment, as mentioned in 12News. Anyone with knowledge of the crime is encouraged to submit information through the program's confidential tip line or website.
