In a case that has gripped Phoenix residents, a man has been given three consecutive life sentences for the 2021 murders of his family members. Maricopa County Attorney Rachel Mitchell confirmed that Brandon Michael Lujan was sentenced after being found guilty on three counts of First-Degree Murder, each a Class One Dangerous Felony and Domestic Violence offense. The announcement of Lujan's sentencing was made on the heels of his June conviction.
The tragic events unfolded when Lujan, born in January 1987, attacked his family in their Central Phoenix home. He shot his brother and then turned the gun on his parents, eventually having to reload his weapon due to the number of shots fired. Notably, Lujan's young daughters were in his vehicle during the incident, and one of them overheard their father threatening to kill before the sound of gunshots and screams emerged from the residence.
Details from an official statement by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office reveal that Lujan and his wife, Raylien Loest, had been recently evicted from his parent's home. Loest drove with Lujan to the residence on the day of the murder. A representative of the Maricopa County Attorney’s Office told Hoodline that she pled guilty to one count of Hindering Prosecution in the First Degree, a Class Three Felony, and was sentenced to three years in prison.
"To murder your family in such a deliberate, callous manner and express no remorse shows a remarkable lack of humanity," County Attorney Rachel Mitchell stated. The prosecutorial team was praised by Mitchell for their work in making sure that Lujan, described as dangerous, would never be released from prison. During the sentencing, the emotional void left by the victims was echoed by family members. One said in the courtroom, "There is a hole in our lives that will never be filled."
