
Residents of Phoenix hit by the recent storm can find some relief from the power outages, as the City of Phoenix Fire Department and the Office of Emergency Management have sprung into action by mobilizing a citywide response in collaboration with organizations like the Red Cross, providing various resources to those affected.
The City's announcement included information about a temporary shelter established at North High School, located at 111 E. Thomas Road, which was activated by the Red Cross on July 25, 2024, and will be available until 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 27, as the residents face the sweltering heat amidst a blackout furthermore APS, the local power utility, is distributing free ice at Sullivan Elementary School on July 26 at noon, and at North High School throughout the weekend.
For those seeking respite from the extreme temperatures, the Heat Relief Network, a proud partner of the City of Phoenix, has declared all 17 Phoenix Public Library locations as cooling centers during regular business hours, with the Heat Relief Network Map providing all locations.
Additionally, the city has designated the Burton Barr Central Library and the Senior Opportunities West center as overnight respite centers with Burton Barr open 24/7 and the Senior Opportunities West facility welcoming residents nightly from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m., these locations, along with Cholla Library, Harmon Library, and Yucca Library, have even extended their hours to provide a cool haven until 10 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon until 10 p.m. on Sundays.
