The streets of South Phoenix became the unlikely setting for a tragic incident in the early hours of July 24, where a 30-year-old woman met her untimely demise. Identified as Emma Damian, the woman was found lifeless in her vehicle, which had collided with a cement irrigation container near 19th Avenue and Baseline Road. The Phoenix Police Department, responding to what initially seemed like a routine crash at about 12:30 am, soon found themselves piecing together the events that led to Damian’s death, according to FOX 10 Phoenix.
Investigators gathering details at the scene quickly uncovered a narrative steeped in violence. They learned that prior to the crash, another vehicle had been in close pursuit, firing shots at Damian's car. "During the initial investigation, information was learned that a second vehicle was seen following Damian north on 19th Avenue shooting at her. Damian’s vehicle was then witnessed accelerating north and driving off the roadway striking the irrigation container," Sgt. Brian Bower described in a statement obtained by FOX 10 Phoenix.
The outcome of this fatal pursuit was first discovered by officers responding to reports of an accident. Upon their arrival, they were confronted with the aftermath of not just a crash but also a possible shooting. Damian was pronounced dead at the scene, but the exact cause of her death remains to be determined. The role that the gunfire played in the incident is currently under review, with officials awaiting results from the medical examiner to clarify the circumstances surrounding her death.
Parallel to the ongoing investigation, the Phoenix Police Department's Homicide detectives are working diligently to uncover additional information. As emphasized by 12 News, authorities have yet to determine if Damian was struck during the shooting or if the fatal injuries were a consequence of the collision.
