The Phoenix urban landscape is about to get significantly greener, and the local economy set to receive a boost, courtesy of a sizable donation from The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation. In what is being called a historic development for Local First Arizona, the non-profit has received over $1 million to not only enlarge the footprint of the Heart & Soil People's Garden in South Central Phoenix but also to expand its ambit of entrepreneurial support programs.

This influx of capital, according to Phoenix New Times, is going to allow Local First to nearly double the size of the community garden, which has been serving as both a food source and educational hub in an area recognized as a food desert. The additional space is slated to include new classrooms and lavatory facilities, which will enable the garden to further up its game in providing educational opportunities to the community. Kimber Lanning, Local First founder and CEO, underscored the significance of the expansion, saying, "Families can come here and get free fresh produce and learn how to grow food at home. It’s increasing food security."

Garden Director Nika Forté, who was instrumental in turning what was a vacuous lot into a vibrant center of urban agriculture and female empowerment, is thrilled about the opportunities this donation creates. "It's something that was truly motivating and makes me feel like we are on the path we are supposed to be on," Forté told Phoenix New Times. Beyond growing fruits and vegetables, the garden is also focused on helping women learn to craft food products, like sauces and salads, thus fostering an entrepreneurial spirit.

As for the beneficiaries of the donation, it's not just the community at large that'll taste the fruits of this grant. A significant portion of the funding is earmarked to support Local First's business accelerators—Fuerza Local, Nivel Ejecutivo, and We Rise—all programs designed to empower Spanish-speaking and Black entrepreneurs. "Investing in the future of entrepreneurs who have less access to certain opportunities is the right thing to do," Bob Parsons, co-founder of The Bob & Renee Parsons Foundation, expressed to PRWeb. These programs are specifically tailored to foster success in business, from financial literacy and customer service to robust networking opportunities.

The donation has been observed to come at a critical juncture, especially as experts warn that farmland in Maricopa County is vanishing at an alarming rate. The Heart & Soil People’s Garden, designated a People's Garden by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, has become a bulwark against this loss, producing thousands of pounds of produce each year. Renee Parsons referred to the project as "an oasis of healing and health" when she witnessed first-hand the transformation brought by the garden on a recent visit. As she stated, "It was a privilege to meet and hear the stories of the women who currently grow onsite at the garden."
