In a fatal officer-involved shooting in Pierce County, a suspect was killed following a pursuit that began near the intersection of Mountain Highway and 252nd Street East yesterday afternoon. The Pierce County Sheriff's Department reported to KIRO 7 that the incident quickly escalated into a chase after deputies attempted to stop the man, identified as a person of interest in other investigations.
The sequence of events leading up to the shooting saw the suspect reportedly ramming into a deputy's vehicle, causing minor injuries to the officer. The pursuit ensued, eventually leading to a residential area in Graham, where the suspect exited his vehicle and attempted to quickly secure himself inside a home, according to KOMO News.
Witnesses in the area described hearing gunfire and seeing the high-speed chase unfold. “I heard one or two gunshots,” said local resident John Trussell in an interview with KIRO 7. Another resident, Emily Padilla, stated, “It sounded like firework, that’s what I thought it was. But then I heard the yelling and then like it was like pew pew and stuff and, then I went in and it was super-fast and louder.” Padilla, who had children over for daycare at the time, articulated her shock, emphasizing her belief that such events were unlikely in what she thought to be a peaceful neighborhood.
The chase concluded near the intersection of 260th Street East and 70th Avenue East, where the suspect was fatally shot after abandoning his vehicle and running toward a nearby home. Despite attempts to perform life-saving measures, the suspect died at the scene, as reported by FOX 13 Seattle. The Pierce County Force Investigation Team has been enlisted to take over the investigation. In line with procedure, the involved deputies have been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the inquiry.
