Residents of Pittsburgh and its surrounding areas can expect dry, and pleasant conditions today, thanks to high pressure that's firmly in control. While today may be clear, changes are on the horizon with an increase in cloud cover and precipitation chances starting Monday, and possibly extending into mid-week, according to the National Weather Service Pittsburgh PA.
The near-term forecast is straightforward, Dry, quiet weather is expected today with a slight chance of patchy river valley fog in the early morning hours, particularly near I-80 and south of Morgantown. The warmth will continue into the afternoon, with high temperatures expected to be near to slightly above average, ranging from the mid to upper-80s, though heat index values are anticipated to stay below 90F, a welcome reprieve for the denizens of Pittsburgh searching for respite from the more oppressive conditions that often settle over the city.
But the quiet weather won't last long. "Probabilities are elevated (above 50%) for areas south and east of Pittsburgh to observed t-storm after 12pm," the forecast discussion notes, as the week progresses. The reason lies with a new low-pressure system forming to the west, which is slated to bring thunderstorms to the region beginning Monday morning.
Aviation interests should note that VFR conditions are expected through Monday morning under current high pressure. However, "Scattered showers and thunderstorms, and restrictions, especially during the afternoon and evening hours, are expected Monday through Wednesday, as shortwaves embedded in southwest flow cross the region," the NWS Pittsburgh advised.
