A high-speed pursuit by Warren police that began with officers attempting to pull over suspected drag racers has tragically culminated in the death of a 42-year-old woman. Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido and Warren Police have shared details about the incident and the subsequent charges against a 26-year-old Pontiac man. James Hudson, the man driving one of the Dodge Chargers, has been charged with second-degree murder, among other counts, after his vehicle collided with a Jeep, taking the life of Katrina Michael, who was a mother of two.

The chase was initiated around 1:35 a.m. last Saturday at the junction of 8 Mile and Ryan roads when Warren police identified three Dodge Chargers allegedly drag racing. Officers' attempts to stop the vehicles were unsuccessful, leading to the pursuit. The Warren Police Commissioner, Charles Rushton, backed the difficult decision-making involved in police chases. "Part of the problem is even if we terminate the pursuit doesn't necessarily mean that driver is going to slow back down to the speed limit and start driving in a normal manner again," he said, as cited by FOX 2 Detroit.

The pursuit escalated as two of the Chargers bolted down 10 Mile Road, west near Dequindre, where Hudson's vehicle crashed into the Jeep carrying Katrina Michael, resulting in her death. He now faces a life sentence if convicted of second-degree murder and additional decades in prison for other counts including four counts of fleeing and eluding and three counts of reckless driving causing serious impairment of bodily functions. "A precious life has been lost and three others injured due to the senseless action of this individual. We will pursue justice for the victims and their families, ensuring that the perpetrator is held accountable for these crimes", Prosecutor Lucido said, as per WXYZ.

Furthermore, dashcam footage from the chase has been released, providing a stark visual account of the events that led to the fatal crash. Police are still looking for the second Dodge Charger that fled from the initial stop. This incident adds to a worryingly growing list of fatalities resulting from vehicle pursuits by Warren police, noted in previous reports from local news agencies. According to the Detroit Free Press, there have been several since December, including a suspect who crashed while driving through a red light and another who rolled their vehicle as police began to disengage the chase.

Hudson was given a $1 million cash/surety bond with the condition of a steel cuff tether if released. The Macomb County Prosecutor and Warren police continue their investigation and the search for the remaining suspect, emphasizing the grave repercussions of reckless behavior and evasion of law enforcement, according to WXYZ.
