The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) is currently on the lookout for new members to join its Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC). This committee functions as an advisory body that provides recommendations to the City Council and city bureaus on biking-related issues. With seven spots open for a two-year term, the BAC is inviting Portland residents to apply, particularly those who possess a strong interest in biking, according to the City of Portland, Oregon.
Meetings for the 20-member committee are held monthly, and due to the current circumstances, they convene virtually. Individuals who become part of the BAC will get a chance to actively partake in evaluating and providing input on various transportation initiatives, city projects, and others led by partner agencies. According to their announcement, the next meeting is scheduled for October 8, with the new members in attendance. Interested applicants have until August 18, to submit their applications.
"We're looking for candidates interested in riding bicycles and working to make the city a more inclusive, accessible, and safe place to ride (and walk and take transit) for everyone. Not an expert? No problem! We're more interested in your lived experience and having voices representing the many different communities that make Portland a great place to live," said Ally Holmqvist, the Chairperson of the BAC, emphasizing the committee's inclusive approach. Those looking to influence biking policies and city planning in Portland will find this an ideal volunteering opportunity, as per the City of Portland, Oregon.
Committee members will have a range of responsibilities, from advising on bicycle-related matters including planning, budgeting, parking, storage, design, and construction, to supporting the City Council's efforts to enhance bicycling citywide. Ally Holmqvist encourages diverse community voices to join, "As a member, you'll advise all city bureaus on bicycling-related matters including planning, budgeting, parking, storage, design, and construction. Your work on the BAC will support the City Council in efforts to improve bicycling throughout Portland and have impact for years to come." Prospective members from all over Portland are urged to share their voices and contribute to the city's future, as cited by the City of Portland, Oregon.
To be considered for the committee, candidates should be able to commit to monthly meetings, have effective communication skills, and demonstrate a passion for cycling in its various forms. In addition to residing, working, or being involved in the city of Portland, applicants are expected to show enthusiasm for promoting biking not just as a means of transportation, but also for recreation and environmental benefits.
