The Portland Bureau of Transportation's Safe Routes to School team is buzzing with new energy, thanks in large part to the addition of two high school summer interns. In an announcement made on Portland.gov, the bureau reported that Jason and Matthew have joined the team, bringing with them a fresh perspective and youthful enthusiasm to the initiative aimed at ensuring children have safe, accessible pathways to and from their educational havens.
The duo is set to actively contribute to various projects, such as the recent participation at the Oregon Active Transportation Summit. The Safe Routes to School team has to continuously adapt to ensure that safety and accessibility for school children remains at the forefront of city planning. One such initiative, a wayfinding signage grant aimed at walking school buses and bike buses, is among the updates provided in the July newsletter released by PBOT.
As Portland swelters under high summer temperatures, the presence of these initiatives is a testament to the city's commitment to fostering a healthy lifestyle among its youth by making the trek to school as safe and sustainable as possible. "Things feel different on the Safe Routes to School team," says the release, attributing this shift to the new additions and ongoing programs that keep the city's young pedestrians and cyclists at heart.
