A tragic incident has left the Portland community mourning after Gad Alon, a 74-year-old bicyclist, succumbed to injuries sustained in a fall earlier this month, according to the Portland Police Bureau (PPB). The bureau later clarified that this was not a traffic-related fatality.
Reports indicate that on July 6, Alon was biking near the intersection of Southwest Capitol Highway and Southwest Florida Street when he fell off his bicycle. The initial incident did not suggest a crime or vehicular involvement, and the Portland Police were not called to respond. However, the Traffic Division was notified after Alon passed away in the hospital on the morning of Thursday, 11 days post-accident. The PPB has expressed deepest condolences to Alon's family and loved ones. Despite the tragic outcome, the Traffic Division is actively investigating and has found no evidence of other drivers' involvement in the ordeal.
The loss has been noted by the PPB as the 35th traffic-related death in Portland for the year 2024, although Alon's death is distinguished by its apparent medical nature. The PPB Traffic Division urges anyone with information regarding the incident to come forward and help piece together the final moments leading to Alon's unfortunate departure. They are asked to reach out by email to [email protected], referencing case number 24-178154.
