Early this morning, Portland firefighters were called to a series of urgent situations that tested their capabilities to the fullest. A two-alarm house fire in the Sylvan-Highland neighborhood became the focal point of their determined efforts. According to a report by Portland Fire & Rescue, crews were dispatched at 7:26 a.m. to a residence in the 200 block of Macleay Blvd., where they encountered significant flames in a home purportedly under construction.

Upon arrival, the Incident Commander (IC) assessed the situation and, along with Engine and Truck 3, proceeded to tackle the blaze that had engulfed the upper floors of the three-story building. The IC observed several individuals outside of the property and by 7:34 a.m., reports confirmed that all occupants had safely evacuated. A particularly precarious moment arose when a firefighter's helmet came into contact with a live power line, which had fallen from the building and was obscured by direct sunlight.

In an effort to contain the spread of the fire, smoke emanating from an adjacent house required additional response, prompting the IC to call for a second alarm. This action brought the total number of responders to 73, a significant mobilization necessitated by the gravity of the situation. Portland Fire & Rescue navigated the logistical challenges posed by the narrow, winding streets typical of the west hills to stage and effectively deploy second alarm crews.

"It was the swift action by firefighters that kept this from extending to other structures," the IC noted, underscoring the efficiency and coordination of the responding teams. The original fire was declared under control by 8:06 a.m., and though the cause of the fire remains in the hands of investigators, no injuries have been reported. Two Fire Investigators were brought in to pinpoint the fire's origin, which was determined to be a second-story bedroom.

In the wake of the incident, Portland Fire & Rescue urges the community to exercise caution regarding downed power lines. Residents are advised to call 911 if they come across such hazards and to maintain a distance of at least 30 feet, always treating downed lines.
