In a recent crackdown on human trafficking in Portland, authorities carried out a targeted initiative resulting in multiple arrests and citations during the last week of June. The Portland Police Bureau's Human Trafficking Unit (HTU), along with assistance from local and federal agencies, patrolled the area along 82nd Avenue, known for illicit activities.

According to a report from the Portland Police Bureau, the operation led to the arrest or citation of six men for Commercial Sexual Solicitation (CSS) and/or Unlawful Prostitution Procurement Activities (UPPA). Those charged included Elijah Grant, Dominick Iaderaia, Nicholas McGuffin, Terry Sanborn, Douglas Stoker, and Brandon Weaver. Additionally, Kenny Christensen was arrested on a probation violation detainer.

Diligent efforts during the mission also resulted in four towed vehicles and the contact of eight providers. These providers were offered assistance and the availability of resources and advocacy were made available to them. The operations unmasked numerous other potential buyers and providers in the vicinity who were likely contributing to the community's ongoing struggle with illegal activities.

The HTU confronts various challenges when dealing with cases of human trafficking, such as victims' repeated traumatic exposures, trauma bonds with traffickers, and, fear of retaliation. "Victims in these cases are often reluctant to come forward, make a report, and/or continue through the criminal justice process," details the police bureau's statement. To address these issues, HTU emphasizes trauma-informed, victim-centered services with the support of the Victim Services Unit advocates and community-based partnerships.

With numerous complaints from community members, organizations, and business partners about the illegal activities on 82nd Avenue, PPB and HTU's initiative underscores their ongoing commitment to tackling human trafficking and supporting the well-being of the affected individuals in the Portland community.
