On Monday afternoon, Murfreesboro felt the fury of nature as high winds swept through the city, catching residents and infrastructure in its sudden chaos. The National Weather Service (NWS) is investigating a possible tornado that is reported to have hit near the Dollar General on Medical Center Parkway, as conveyed by WKRN. Amid this unexpected weather event, surveillance footage revealed a startling image: an equipment trailer from Middle Tennessee State University flipped on its side and pushed against a fence at Floyd Stadium.
According to a spokesperson for Middle Tennessee State University, cited by NewsChannel 5, no injuries were reported from the storm. However, there were instances of localized flooding, and power was out briefly for parts of the campus. MTSU also witnessed trees down on top of cars, an image emblematic of the storm's destructive potential. WSMV reports, that a crew from NWS will determine if a tornado was indeed the cause of the damage in Murfreesboro, particularly near the discussed retail area.
The aftermath of the storm saw the Murfreesboro Police Department providing traffic control at several city intersections, due to traffic light outages prompted by the storm's severity. While many traffic signals were restored, some, including those at Cason Lane and Old Fort (Hwy 99), remained flashing. In a statement obtained by WKRN, the department indicated that most streets had been cleared of fallen trees or limbs by city street workers.
Rutherford County felt the brunt of the storm with about 1,200 reported power outages, yet no tornado warnings were issued—only thunderstorm warnings. "Police dispatch said there are a few trees down around campus and there was localized flooding in some areas, but no injuries were reported," MTSU's Jimmy Hart told NewsChannel 5. In their pursuit to provide accurate forecasts, the NWS aims to confirm the possible tornado's presence as the community begins its recovery from the storm's grip, compounding the efforts to distinguish nature's caprices from its certainties.
