A dramatic turn of events at the Dedham District Court yesterday saw a prisoner, Quarri Tyree Queen, momentarily evade authorities during a probation violation hearing. According to WHDH, the man was awaiting a hearing when he suddenly bolted from the courthouse, sparking a chase through the surrounding area. The escape prompted a scramble of law enforcement officers who, despite the chaos, managed to apprehend Queen shortly after behind a nearby building.
The incident unfolded alongside the Norfolk County Superior Court where the high-profile Karen Read trial was drawing crowds and a significant police presence. As reported by the Boston Herald, a state trooper referred to the episode involving Queen as the "most bizarre spectacle." In an unexpected moment, Queen's attempt at freedom was cut short when he hesitated to jump over a fence at the Dedham Community House, reconsidering as he noticed children playing nearby, and continued his ill-fated run down Ames Street.
Eye witnesses on the scene expressed a mixture of surprise and disbelief. "We thought something wasn't right, but not scared," one observer recounted, suggesting that the escapee’s actions were puzzling but not immediately threatening. Another bystander, donning a 'Free Karen Read' t-shirt, shared with the Boston Herald, "I was just walking down the street waiting for my girlfriend to come back, so I was standing on a sidewalk waiting, and then all of a sudden someone comes bombing by me, almost knocked me over, and I jokingly said out loud to myself, 'Jesus, did you just rob somebody or commit a crime?'"
Queen was in Court for hearing related to two violations, including an issue with an alcohol-monitoring bracelet and for contacting a victim. His previous arrests include an assault and battery on a family member charge. The botched escape has led to Queen being held without bail, pending sentencing set for July 15, 2024. Not far from the flurry of activity, the Karen Read murder trial had recently been declared a mistrial by Judge Beverly Cannone, adding further gravity to a peculiar day marked by escaped convict and mixed public emotions.
