Queen Creek Mayor Julia Wheatley has stepped into a significant role within Arizona's transportation and infrastructure framework. Elected as chair of the Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) Transportation Policy Committee, she's now at the forefront of guiding policy decisions for regional transportation needs. Wheatley has a history with the committee, having served since 2022 and holding the vice chair position in 2023-24.
"The MAG Transportation Policy Committee oversees the development of the Regional Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Plan and guides policy decisions related to transportation planning in the region," Wheatley said in a statement obtained by QueenCreekAZ.gov. "At such an important time for Arizona transportation and infrastructure, I’m honored to serve and represent our Town as Chair of this Committee."
Alongside her new appointment, Mayor Wheatley will also chair the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority Board of Directors. This role pits her in a strategic position at an airport operated by the PMGAA. This includes a broad tapestry of members such as municipalities of Apache Junction, Mesa, Gilbert, and Queen Creek, as well as the Gila River Indian Community.
Mayor Wheatley's work with MAG is part of a larger engagement between local governments within the Phoenix area. MAG's collaboration involves 27 municipalities, three Native nations, Maricopa County, parts of Pinal County, and the Arizona Department of Transportation to truly elevate and integrate local needs within regional planning. This partnership is crucial, as Phoenix's infrastructure and transportation landscape continue to grow and evolve.
