More than a year has passed since a body was discovered on the shoreline of the Ohio River, and that body has now been identified as JayShawn Fountain, a 17-year-old from Wilkins Township, just outside of Pittsburgh. Fountain went missing in February 2023, and his remains were found in Wellsville, Ohio on April 5th of the same year, according to CBS News Pittsburgh.
The initial evaluation by the Cuyahoga County Coroner's Office had estimated the age of the deceased to be between 30-40 years, an unexpected detail that, hindered the identification process. Efforts to match DNA and fingerprints were initially unsuccessful, explained authorities, according to CBS News Pittsburgh. The breakthrough in the case didn't happen until June 2024 when they finally confirmed the identity of the young man who vanished shortly after leaving Propel Braddock Hills High School.
On the day of his disappearance, Fountain's guardian had spoken to him as he left school. Phone records seemed to place him near the Monroeville Mall, and his duffle bag was later located in Wilkinsburg. He was also seen boarding a Pittsburgh Regional Transit bus, which might have been one of his last known actions before he went missing, as reported by WTAE.
While there is certain relief in identifying the loss, the Wellsville Police Department has not released further information concerning the cause or circumstances surrounding JayShawn's death. They sent their condolences to Fountain's family and friends, marking the close of a chapter, in a story that no community wants to witness.
