Yesterday, a vehicle incident along the waterfront turned into a rescue operation when a car ended up in the water along 900 North Harbor Drive near the Midway Museum. Harbor PD has confirmed the details of the incident, which prompted a prompt response from multiple agencies.
After the vehicle left the roadway for reasons still under investigation, emergency teams, including SDFD firefighters and the Lifeguard Division's dive team, were called to the scene with assistance from the Coast Guard. The response involved divers plunging into the depths, where the submerged vehicle rested approximately 40 feet below the surface. Upon identifying the car's location, a first dive was made to assess its position before devising a strategy for extraction, according to Harbor PD's report.
The subsequent dive involved three SDFD lifeguard divers and one diver from Harbor PD. Their coordinated effort resulted in the vehicle's lone occupant being extricated and brought aboard a Harbor PD boat. Tragically, the victim was pronounced at the scene.
Resource allocation was significant in the rescue effort: two engines, a rescue unit, a truck, two medic units, a battalion chief, and two administrative personnel, totaling 23 individuals, were engaged in the operation. A fire investigator was not called upon for the emergency. Harbor PD has not released further details on the cause of the crash but is continuing the investigation.
