Early Wednesday morning, a shooting incident shook Salem's Riverfront Park, leaving behind a scene studded with 96 bullet casings and damaged property. According to KPTV, witnesses heard gunfire around 1:20 a.m., stemming from an altercation between two groups. Responding to the chaos, Salem Police discovered numerous vehicles and the iconic carousel building marred by bullets.
The sound of rapid gunfire, captured in a disturbing audio clip, was later posted by the Salem Police Department as they sought assistance from the public. Despite arriving swiftly after reports, the authorities, as detailed by KOIN, found the aggressors had fled, leaving damaged cars and a punctured carousel in their wake.
No injuries were reported to the police from the incident. However, the damages sustained by the Hazel Patton Riverfront Park Carousel were both visible and substantial, including two shattered windows. The Salem Reporter quotes Marie Bradford-Blevins, the carousel’s executive director, estimating the repair costs at approximately $2,200. The carousel, a nonprofit entity, will bear the brunt of the expenses as their insurance does not cover the damage to the building exterior.
Despite the unfortunate set of the night's occurrences, the carousel resumed operations the next day, with boarded plywood marking where bullets once pierced. "We didn’t look pretty but we opened," Bradford-Blevins told The Salem Reporter. The community has been requested to assist financially via donations to help cover the unexpected expenditures. Police continue their appeal for information, urging anyone with insights, especially regarding suspicious vehicles that may have bullet holes, to contact the Salem Police at 503-588-8477.
The investigation remains active and ongoing as detectives piece together the precise events that transpired in Riverfront Park. KPTV reports an emphasis on gathering surveillance footage or images that may have captured the dispute or the individuals involved.
