In a concerted push to address the issue of overcrowding in local animal shelters, the San Antonio Animal Care Services (SAACS) is calling on the community for assistance, launching its Empty the Shelters event, which will run until the end of July. During this time, San Antonio residents can adopt a pet for a nominal fee of $25, a measure designed to encourage the rehoming of the numerous dogs and cats currently housed at SAACS.
This initiative, backed financially by the BISSELL Pet Foundation, seeks to provide a more manageable environment for the shelter at what is typically its most crowded period of the year, they are not only reducing adoption fees but also offering a subsidy to the shelter for each pet that finds a new home, allowing the shelter to continue its vital work. According to an official press release, "SAACS also receives a lifesaving donation for every pet placed with a new family—those funds go right back into helping even more dogs and cats in the shelter."
Potential adopters can take advantage of this opportunity by visiting SAACS at 4710 State Hwy 151, with the shelter operating hours extending from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays and till 5 p.m. on weekends, mindful that the process of adoption is concluded half an hour prior to closing to allow ample time for the necessary paperwork. The pets available for adoption come sterilized, vaccinated with initial shots, and microchipped with lifetime registration at no extra cost; for dog adopters, there is an added perk of access to basic obedience training sessions.
The SAACS's adoption efforts are straightforward: a first-come, first-served policy is in place and standard adoption procedures must be adhered to, prospective pet owners are encouraged to begin their search online by browsing the available pets through the SAACS website. By adopting, community members can make an immediate and positive impact on the lives of these animals, while also indirectly supporting the continued service of SAACS in the broader San Antonio area.
