The Guerra Branch Library, a fixture in San Antonio’s far west side, is celebrating its 20th anniversary with an event for all ages this Saturday. According to the city's official release, the San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) is inviting the community to partake in the festivities at the library from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Marked by a ceremony that will commence at 10:30 a.m., the event is slated to include a variety of activities, such as a scavenger hunt themed "Guerra's Heart," crafts to beat the summer heat, and a chance to snap photos in a specially designed photo booth. Attendees can, also make a commemorative button, play indoor games like ring toss and bean-bag toss, and explore a special exhibit dedicated to the library's history. Refreshments are to be provided, and guests can meet Smarty, the SAPL mascot.
Educational and enriching opportunities have been a hallmark of Guerra Branch Library since it opened its doors on July 14, 2004. Funded by $2.8 million from a 1999 bond election, complemented by $1 million from Community Development Block Grant funds, the library was named after Henry A. Guerra, an esteemed local historian, author, and broadcaster who passed in 2001. Guerra was recognized for breaking barriers as the first Mexican-American announcer on major English-language radio and television broadcasters in San Antonio.
