The San Antonio Police Department (SAPD) has reported that the officer shot while responding to a domestic disturbance call is now in stable condition post-surgery. According to a statement provided by the SAPD and reported on by FOX San Antonio, the officer is "in good spirits but has a long road to recovery ahead of her." The SAPD officer, whose name has not been released, was injured on Sunday, July 28, on Patricia Drive while responding to the call.
Upon arriving at the scene at 3 a.m., officers were confronted by a suspect who opened fire while lying in bed with a rifle beside him; the incident left one officer wounded, necessitating surgery at a local hospital, per reports from KENS 5. Following the exchange of fire, the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene, and SWAT subsequently secured the apartment.
The wounded officer is currently receiving further medical treatment at Brooke Army Medical Center (BAMC), where Bart Vasquez, the executive director of the 100 Club of San Antonio, expressed that during his visit, the officer's family was moved and grateful for the community's support and his organization's financial assistance to first responders' families. "That's a good thing for us that families of first responders don't know we exist because that means they are not thinking about what could happen," Vasquez told KENS 5, "But when they find out we exist and they find out what we do, and they find that we're 100% funded by the community they are tremendously moved and they are grateful for what the community and the 100 club do for them."
While the medical examiner has yet to make public the identity of the 25-year-old suspect involved Chief McManus noted that the three officers involved, including the injured party, have all been with the department for less than three years. The SAPD continues to investigate the incident and has promised to provide updates concerning the officer's recovery.
