In the ongoing effort to curb the circulation of illegal firearms, San Marcos Sheriff's deputies made a notable arrest last Saturday. Deputies pulled over a vehicle on West Mission Road near Comet Circle, according to the San Diego County Sheriff's Office. It was approximately 9:30 p.m. when Victor Lopez, a passenger in said car, fled the scene.
Lopez, born on February 20, 1999, did not manage to evade officers for long. After a brief chase, the authorities caught and detained him, discovering he was carrying a loaded, privately manufactured firearm — a ghost gun. Ghost guns, infamous for bearing no traceable serial numbers, pose a significant barrier in law enforcement investigations. They cannot be easily linked to their owners or originators, hindering or delaying the crime-solving process.
Lopez, now recognized also as a convicted felon, faces multiple firearms-related charges arising from his possession of the weapon. He currently resides at the Vista Detention Facility awaiting further proceedings, the gravity of the charges against him reflecting the serious view law enforcement takes on the possession and distribution of untraceable firearms.
The San Diego County Sheriff's Office encourages the public to report criminal activities they witness in their neighborhoods by calling (858) 565-5200. Community engagement is heralded as an essential aspect in the fight against crime and maintaining public safety, with the public's cooperation serving as an invaluable resource for the Sheriff's department.
