The City of San Marcos is opening its arms to welcome the community for a ribbon-cutting event to introduce enhancements to Paul Peña Park. Planned for July 8, the ceremony heralds the park’s improvement project, featuring upgraded playground equipment, added shade and turf, and a new sidewalk path designed with ADA compliance in mind, these park upgrades have also made room for a compact skate spot enjoyed by local skaters, as reported by the City of San Marcos.
Providing the financial foundation for these improvements was a Community Development Block Grant totaling $200,500, accompanied by additional park improvement funds to the tune of $5,214.62; Jamie Lee Case, San Marcos Director of Parks and Recreation, expressed the community’s aspiration for these enhancements, saying, "We’re always listening to our neighbors, and they voiced that this is something they wanted," as stated by the City of San Marcos.
A poignant addition to the improvements, a new plaque dedicated to CPT Peña will be revealed in the presence of his family, the ceremony itself serving as a communal conduit for both remembrance and rejuvenation, the event will stand as a testament to Peña’s valor and the city’s commitment to recognizing its heroes. As detailed by the City of San Marcos, the ceremony is scheduled to commence at 9 a.m. at the park, located at 1209 Crystal River Parkway.
