The San Mateo Police Department has announced the arrest of a suspect, Juan Pablo Sanchez, for an armed robbery that took place in June this year. The arrest on Monday follows a thorough investigation involving surveillance footage and a series of search warrants.

On June 8, a masked individual robbed a Check Cashing business on the 600 block of S. Norfolk Street, threatening a female cashier with a gun before fleeing with approximately $16,000. Officers collected video evidence from neighborhood security cameras, revealing that the suspect had escaped the scene in a rideshare vehicle. According to the San Mateo Police Department, several search warrants later, authorities identified Sanchez as their prime suspect.

Sanchez, aged 21, was apprehended in Redwood City during a traffic stop. Following the arrest, police executed further search warrants on his vehicle and residence in San Mateo. The search resulted in the discovery of two loaded firearms, drugs, additional ammunition, and evidence linking Sanchez to the robbery. One of the firearms was reported stolen and found alongside armor-piercing bullets.

The San Mateo Police Department reported, "Within 3 days of the incident, officers were able to obtain a likely identification of this suspect because of the “boots on the ground” police work it takes to walk our neighborhoods looking for evidence and witnesses, utilizing records management systems and databases, as well as relying on their training and experience." The arrest of Sanchez, who had been arrested previously in 2023 for unlawful possession of a firearm, brings closure to the June case and potentially prevents future crimes.

The department continues to advocate for the use of home security cameras by residents, emphasizing their value in solving crimes. Footage from these cameras not only aids in identifying suspects but also provides critical evidence for prosecution. San Mateo residents are encouraged to register their cameras with the Neighborhood Eyes Security Team (NEST) to further assist law enforcement in their community.
