The City of Sandy Springs has ushered in a new era of emergency response capability with the grand opening of Fire Station 5. Located at the intersection of 7800 Mount Vernon Road and Spalding Drive, the 10,912 square-foot, two-story structure is poised to serve the Panhandle region of the city, as outlined in an announcement from the city's official website.
At the inaugural ceremony, some notable figures were in full attendance: Mayor Rusty Paul, members of the City Council, City Manager Eden Freeman, and Fire Chief Keith Sanders, along with the crew of Station 5. They commemorated the event with a ceremonial hose uncoupling, a nod to tradition. In the words of Fire Chief Sanders, as obtained by the City of Sandy Springs, “This is a very special day and a historic day in the City of Sandy Springs.” He highlighted the benefit of the new facility in providing the firefighters "with the resources they need to respond to emergencies more efficiently and effectively."
Beyond its functionalities such as a two-bay apparatus storage room, sleeping quarters, and kitchen, Fire Station 5 is equipping its firefighters with advanced tools for safety and efficiency. To this caliber, decontamination showers and state-of-the-art gear wash stations have been installed for the removal of toxins, critical after battling blazes.
This inaugural fire station is an answer to the calls for shorter EMS and fire response times from local residents. Prior to this, the area was primarily served by Fire Station No. 51 and received additional aid from Engine 55 at the City of Roswell’s Fire Station No. 27. "The sweetest sound when you're in an emergency is the sound of the siren because you know that help is on its way," Mayor Rusty Paul told those present, according to a statement on the city's website. He emphasized the significance of the new station's proximity to the community, highlighting local engagement and support for the project.
