The city of Santa Monica is set fair for a week of fresh produce and community engagement as it prepares to mark National Farmers Market Week this August 4-10. As envisioned by City of Santa Monica officials, the celebrations are to unfold across four distinct farmers markets, each bringing something unique to the table, quite literally.
Activities are slated to commence with the Main Street Market event on August 4, where attendees can indulge from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and reach a finale at the Pico Farmers Market on August 10, lasting from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.; both bookend events will feature special activities, music, and a cornucopia of locally grown produce alongside an array of prepared and prepackaged food options, and even photo ops for the social media savvy. Established in 1981, the Santa Monica Farmers Markets have burgeoned from a single market to four weekly markets that now boast more than 150 farm stands, they sell an array of goods ranging from stone fruit to artichokes.
Insight into the markets' offerings and objectives comes via the Santa Monica Farmers Market Coordinator, Kym Otterstedt, who told the City of Santa Monica, "The Santa Monica Farmers Markets are a great place to shop for items you may not have tried before." Otterstedt elaborates on their mission, noting, "We do all this and have fun, feed people and make new friends along the way."
Aligning with a nationwide recognition of the farmers market's place within communities, Willa Sheikh, executive director of the Farmers Market Coalition, highlights the deeper implication they hold, she said, "Markets are designed in partnership with the people they serve and are a place where market operators, farmers, shoppers and neighbors can collaborate to meet the evolving needs of their community." The markets not only celebrate the cultural vitality they bring to Santa Monica but also endorse essential nutrition programs such as SNAP/EBT, P-EBT, SunBucks Cards, and the Market Match Program—which at the Main Street and Pico markets, allows customers to receive a match of up to $20 for fresh fruits and vegetables, reinforcing their commitment to accessibility and health within their community dynamics.
