Library lovers in Savage have something to celebrate as the local library branch unveils its Extended Access program. Beginning July 18, those who sign up for the service can use their library cards as a key to the building beyond the regular staffed hours, providing a new layer of convenience. According to Scott County's website, this feature applies to four other county libraries as well.

The Extended Access initiative allows for uninterrupted study times, remote work opportunities, and quiet family time in the children's area from 6 am to 10 pm every day, as per Scott County, Minnesota, including holidays, the service is meant to augment, not replace, the presence of the usual helpful library staff. To use Extended Access, members simply need to scan their library card and enter a 4-digit PIN at the entry panel outside the main entrance, the door will then unlock, granting them entrance.

Signing up is easy, as explained on the Extended Access page. New users will need to complete an orientation which includes a video and a user agreement, after which the library card is activated for the Extended Access feature. A photo ID is required for verification purposes during the registration process. For those needing a new library card, one can be created during their visit.

While the Extended Access mode is operational, library patrons can take advantage of self-checkout machines and available computers, though assistance from staff is limited to regular hours. "Extended Access periods are entirely self-service, meaning library staff won't be present to assist. (No worries, we're still available to assist during regular staffed hours.)" details the official statement.
