Seattle's Mayor Bruce Harrell is strengthening the city's leadership backbone with the help of some prestigious allies. The mayor and his team have joined the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, a program aimed at enhancing the efficacy of city governance. The initiative, a joint effort between Bloomberg Philanthropies, Harvard Kennedy School, and Harvard Business School, is in its eighth cohort and is an incubator for municipal leadership skills and innovation.

"Innovation and improvement are part of Seattle’s DNA, and the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative is an opportunity to double down on our work to be one of the most well-managed and data-driven local governments in the nation", Harrell stated, as cited by the Office of the Mayor. The mayor expressed gratitude towards Bloomberg Philanthropies and Harvard University for their support in this endeavor, as the city focuses on serving its community "effectively, efficiently, and equitably."

Seattle is currently undertaking a Procurement Transformation Project to reshape City purchasing and contracting processes to be more outcome-driven and equitable. A one-million-dollar grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies bolsters this effort, and technical support is obtained from the Harvard Kennedy School Government Performance Lab. Seattle's commitment to progress through data-driven methods is clear, following its gold certification for data usage from What Works Cities and Bloomberg Philanthropies.

The coalition of resources from Harvard faculties, staff, and the Bloomberg Philanthropies global network offers mayors and city officials a one-year curriculum. Topics spread across economic development, civic engagement, and human resource management, among others, to foster expertise that delivers real-world civil impact – enabling leaders to tackle increasingly global urban challenges. Alan Garber, Harvard University's Interim President, remarked on the diversity and potential of the leaders: "They work with one another and draw on resources from throughout the University to address pressing social problems, improving the lives of millions of people", as stated by the Office of the Mayor.

About Bloomberg Philanthropies, the organization strives to generate lasting change in key areas across various cities and countries. In 2023 alone, Bloomberg Philanthropies doled out $3 billion, echoing its focus on arts, education, environment, government innovation, and public health. Furthermore, the Bloomberg Center for Cities at Harvard University, established just three years ago, cements its role as a hub for academics and practitioners dedicated to enhancing municipal governance worldwide.
