Seattle's youth is gearing up to bring a fresh wave of talent to Benaroya Hall this summer, with the announcement of the 2024 Teen Summer Musical—a vibrant annual event that showcases the diverse abilities of local teens through the arts. Scheduled for August 23-25, the musical promises to be a blend of culture, community, and the raw energy that only teenage performers can bring to the stage, according to the Seattle Parks and Recreation.
Seattle Parks and Recreation, in collaboration with Acts on Stage, a Black-owned and operated community theater, takes pride in presenting "Snow White & The Seven," a reimagined take on the classic fairy tale that integrates cultural narratives familiar to its predominately Color cast of actors. The run-up to the show isn't just a quick rehearsal schedule; these teens dive into a full 10-week summer program that involves rigorous nine-hours-a-day, Monday through Friday practices, where they sharpen their skills in acting, dance, vocals, and the often overlooked but intricate world of backstage craft—costume design, lighting, and set construction.
"The summer musical is an opportunity for local teens (mostly of Color) to perform in a musical theater production that reflects their culture and community while learning the disciplines of stage," the Seattle Parks and Recreation Department explained, signaling a commitment to not only entertainment but also to the representation and professional development of its young performers.
