Commuters on westbound I-96 in Brighton Township faced significant delays Tuesday afternoon following a semi-truck fire near Kensington Road. As reported by WWJ Newsradio, the blaze, which began around 3 p.m., resulted in the closure of multiple lanes and long backups until just before 6 p.m.
Michigan State Police were on the scene as the freeway was reduced to one lane while crews worked to clear the debris. Traffic gradually returned to normal, but not before drivers were advised to seek alternative routes, dealing with heavy delays that impacted their afternoon commute, as MSP's social media pages showed the truck's entire cab destroyed by the fire.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation, with no injuries reported. FOX 2 Detroit mentioned on their website that the semi-truck was the only vehicle involved in the incident and that all lanes were eventually reopened after approximately two hours.
On the same incident, WLNS added that officials expected traffic to be slowed until around 5 p.m. but the reopening of the freeway preceded their estimate. The semi-truck fire, which closed several lanes temporarily caused traffic to snarl as officials carried out their investigation and clean-up operations.
