Sequoia High Teacher Foils Suspected Kidnapper's Plan in Redwood CitySource: Google Street View

Chaos momentarily erupted at Sequoia High School in Redwood City yesterday when a man, later identified as Trey Duus, 24, entered a classroom and attempted to kidnap a male student. The Redwood City Police Department reported that the incident occurred around 2:00 p.m. and was disrupted when a teacher courageously intervened, causing the suspect to run away from the scene. Duus reportedly claimed he was armed with a gun to deter school staff from intervening as he made his escape.

Following the encounter, the school quickly went on lockdown while police officers scoured the campus searching for Duus. They eventually located him as he was leaving a school building on the west side, brandishing what appeared to be a long cylindrical object. This object turned out to indeed be an umbrella. Duus attempted to desperately resist arrest, prompting officers to use less-lethal force to detain him effectively. He sustained only minor injuries during the altercation and was subsequently taken to a local hospital for examination.

Investigations revealed that before the attempted abduction and his eventual arrest, Duus had vandalized school property by punching a hole in a bathroom wall and also taking a printer cartridge. These actions, combined with his attempt to remove a student from school grounds forcibly and his resistance to police efforts, resulted in multiple charges. According to police statements, Duus will face charges that include attempted kidnapping, burglary, child endangerment, obstructing officers, vandalism, and trespassing on school grounds.

After being medically cleared, the suspect is set to be booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility. The Redwood City Police Department has assured the school and the broader community that there is no further threat or safety concern related to this incident.
