The Silver Spring Recreation and Aquatic Center (SSRAC) is now the permanent home to a sculpture honoring three-time Olympic medalist, Dominique Dawes. The gymnast, known for her trailblazing achievements, was celebrated in a ceremony that coincided with the kickoff of the Olympic Games, an apt time to champion such an inspiring figure.
"With the Olympic Games kicking off this week, and Simone Biles set to compete in her third Olympics Games, the timing of the statue unveiling couldn't be better,” Dawes expressed in a statement obtained by Montgomery County Press. This recognition comes as Dawes, herself a Montgomery County native, remains the last American gymnast to have competed and medaled across three Olympic Games. She has openly championed the notion that hard work and perseverance can guide one to greatness, a theme reflected in her ascent from modest roots to Olympic glory.
Councilmember Gabe Albornoz articulated, according to Montgomery County Press, that Brian Hanlon was tapped for his nationally esteemed artistic talent. Hanlon has over 300 public and private art pieces to his name, and his expertise brings the legacy of Dawes into physical form for residents and visitors of the county to admire.
Notably, Dawes' influence extends beyond the bounds of the gymnastics arena. She is the owner and CEO of Dominique Dawes Gymnastics and Ninja Academies, which emphasize building a healthy, compassionate culture within the sport. Since opening her first gym in 2020, she has continued to expand her brand, aiming to empower families, women, and young girls on issues crucial to both physical and mental health. Her second gym opened in 2023 and, with a third set to open in Columbia in 2024, Dawes is charging forward with her mission.
Montgomery County Executive Marc Elrich highlighted Dawes' unwavering dedication to the local community during the unveiling, emphasizing her dual role as a revered Olympic athlete and a mentor within the area. “Her achievements as an Olympic athlete are extraordinary, but what truly sets her apart is her unwavering commitment to giving back to our community. This statue stands as a testament to her dedication, integrity and the positive impact she continues to have on young people in Montgomery County. We are grateful to Dominique for her commitment to Montgomery County as a mentor, businesswoman and entrepreneur." Elrich said, recognizing her contributions beyond her historic athletic feats as detailed by Montgomery County Press.
The SSRAC, a sprawling 120,000-square-foot facility, seems a fitting locale for Dawes' statue, given its offerings which include a myriad of aquatic and recreational activities as well as educational spaces. Located at 1319 Apple Avenue, the center now houses the Montgomery County Sports Hall of Fame, of which Dawes is undoubtedly a standout member. For those interested, more information on the SSRAC is available on the county's website.
