A statewide Spectrum outage wreaked havoc on essential services in Bexar County yesterday afternoon, impacting access to 911 calls and causing disruptions across various agencies in the San Antonio area. The Bexar County Sheriff's Office warned through social media, "If you have phone service provided by SPECTRUM, you will not be able to call 911," citing a compromised tower in Houston, battered by the storm, that resulted in internet service outages in that region, this information was discussed by the San Antonio Report.
While the disruptions affected voiceover IP systems, Bexar County Public Information Officer Monica Ramos confirmed that emergency calls made from cellphones could still reach 911 services, she said, "Anyone calling in from a cellphone can get through to 911," Spectrum attributed the cascading failure of internet and phone services beginning shortly after noon to external infrastructure issues linked to Hurricane Beryl's wrath that hit Texas earlier this week, as they mentioned in a social media post at around 3 p.m.
In the face of inaccessible phone lines, University Health, an extensive medical center with two hospitals in San Antonio, directed patients to communicate via MyChart for contacting their healthcare team, adding, "This issue is due to a national Spectrum internet outage," a statement that underscores the breadth of the interruption's reach. The fallout from the Spectrum outage also impaired operations at Bexar County's courts; according to Ramos, by mid-afternoon, "The entire courthouse complex is down. Phones, too."
The precise extent of the Texas outage remained unclear as Spectrum did not disclose specifics, however, reports of disruptions spilled over into city facilities in Kyle and even chatter on social platforms like Reddit signaled outages in the Austin area prompting discussions and concerns among residents. Downdetector, a platform tracking service interruptions, recorded an influx of over 31,000 outage reports by around 1 p.m., signifying a network disturbance reverberating through major cities such as San Antonio, Austin, Houston and extending beyond to locations like Louisville and Oklahoma City as detailed in findings by San Antonio Report with journalist Shari Biediger among contributing sources.
