In a turn of events highlighting the misuse of government funds, a St. Cloud woman has admitted to a scheme draining dollars from the Department of Defense. Elizabeth Carpenter, 44, faces up to a decade behind bars following her guilty plea on charges of stealing government property, as announced by United States Attorney Roger B. Handberg, as per U.S. Attorney's Office, Middle District of Florida.
According to the details of her plea agreement, Carpenter's role as an accounting technician at the Shades of Green resort—an Armed Forces Recreation Center on Walt Disney World Resort property—gave her the necessary access to funnel approximately $183,079 into her personal accounts. This breach, executed through 652 transactions, now obliges her to forfeit the stolen amount. The sentencing, as of yet, has not been slated.
The investigation, a Department of the Army Criminal Investigation Division effort, uncovered the fraudulent refunds issued by Carpenter from July 2022 to March 2024. Carpenter had strategically leveraged her position and computer credentials to wrongly credit portions of guest room payments to her credit card accounts, casting a stark light on the vulnerabilities within the system.
