The St. Petersburg Police Department is actively seeking to identify the driver involved in a tragic accident that tragically claimed the life of a 20-year-old man. The fatal collision, initially reported on the department's website, occurred on July 14th at the intersection of 22nd Avenue South and 13th Street South.
Details released by the police outlined a harrowing scene where a blue Toyota Corolla, with Jeremiah Jones (DOB 01/20/2004) and another 26-year-old male inside, was seen to sharply accelerate eastbound on 22nd Avenue South. At the same intersection, a black Ford Edge, driven by a 62-year-old man from Altamonte Springs, attempted to make a turn. The two vehicles collided, resulting in the Toyota rolling several times—a violent sequence that led to Jones being ejected from the car.
Jones was quickly transported to Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital but succumbed to his injuries the following day. While the second man's medical condition has not been disclosed, authorities are focusing their investigation on the unresolved question of which occupant was driving the Toyota at the time of the accident.
The driver of the Ford Edge stayed to cooperate with law enforcement officials at the scene. As the SPPD continues to piece together the events of July 14th, they have yet to release any further details about the cause of this incident or to conclusively establish fault.
