In a string of incidents marring the Fourth of July celebrations in South Florida, a woman and two teenagers found themselves the unintended victims of stray bullets, while fireworks caused severe injuries to two other minors, according to reports from local authorities. NBC Miami reports that both shots that wounded the woman and the 13-year-old occurred in Miami-Dade County, and while the woman remains in critical condition, no details on the subject responsible for firing have been shared by the authorities as of yet.
The teenager, also 13, was hit by the stray bullet around 11:18 p.m. in Gladeview and is in stable condition; however, the woman was watching fireworks when she was struck in the shoulder at around 10 p.m. in Homestead, she was subsequently airlifted to Jackson South Medical Center, "At this stage of the investigation, there is no information available about the subject responsible for firing the stray bullet,” police said on NBC Miami, leaving a shadow of concern over the reckless discharge of firearms during holiday celebrations. Despite warnings against celebratory gunfire, which remains illegal and dangerous, the incidents underscore the risks posed by bullets that can return to the ground at deadly speeds.
Another grave incident, as detailed by Local 10 News, involved a 17-year-old boy who suffered grave injuries when fireworks exploded on his face in Miami Gardens; the teen is now undergoing surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital after sustaining broken facial bones and brain bleeding during a family event. Marquis Hollinger, a relative, and Nicole Roselien recounted the harrowing moment, saying, "He had a gash on the side of his face," and, "He was burned on one side."
Fireworks injuries were not only limited to Miami Gardens, as a 10-year-old boy in Margate also suffered injuries to his fingers, and a 13-year-old victim in Miami-Dade County burnt their hand while lighting fireworks, illustrating the unintended yet distressing consequences that can accompany the use of pyrotechnics in home celebrations. As per NBC Miami, homestead police are encouraging the public to "exercise caution and follow all safety guidelines during holiday celebrations involving fireworks or other activities that may involve gunfire," a plea that becomes all too relevant in the wake of such incidents, anyone with information has been urged to contact Homestead police at 305-247-1535.
