After more than a decade on the run, a suspect in a child sex crimes case from Washington state has been arrested in Arizona, authorities report. Robert Jennings Vandivier, 34, was taken into custody on July 2 in Mesa, stemming from charges that he allegedly impregnated a 14-year-old girl back in 2009. The arrest followed a concerted effort between Stevens County Sheriff's Office and the U.S. Marshals Service, as described by FOX 10 Phoenix.
The case against Vandivier began when Washington state detectives were tipped off in June 2009, according to information shared by Stevens County officials. After the victim gave birth, DNA testing confirmed Vandivier as the father, prompting an arrest warrant in November 2012. However, by that time Vandivier had disappeared, officials indicated. Recently, in June 2024, local agencies strategized to locate him, successfully leading to July's arrest. Stevens County Prosecuting Attorney Ericka George highlighted the prolonged nature of the case and her anticipation to "finally seek justice for these crimes," in a statement obtained by AZ Central.
The Stevens County Sheriff's Office, through a social media post, articulated their bolstered efforts in coordination with the U.S. Marshals to apprehend violent fugitives within the county. Among the outspoken on the matter, Stevens County Sheriff Brad Manke praised the longstanding collaboration with the U.S. Marshals Service, emphasizing the importance of bringing resolution to these cases.
Vandivier faces third-degree child rape charges and awaits further legal proceedings. The capture underscores the persistent work of law enforcement agencies in pursuing justice, irrespective, of how much time has passed since the alleged crime was committed. Both the FOX 10 Phoenix and AZ Central report, that with Vandivier now in custody, Stevens County's legal system will proceed with the case that has awaited resolution for fifteen years.
