After more than a year on the run, authorities have finally apprehended Marquel Deshawn Ponder, the suspect in a fatal shooting that occurred on Westheimer Road in May 2023. Charged with murder, Ponder was taken into custody by the Atlanta Police Department on July 23, as reported by the City of Houston News. Ponder is currently held in Fulton County, Georgia, awaiting to be extradited normally back to Harris County to face the charges against him.
A second suspect linked to the same incident, Derrick Trumaine Jackquet, had been charged earlier on November 13, 2023, and was arrested by the HPD South Gessner Patrol Division Crime Suppression Team on December 21, 2023. Both Ponder and Jackquet are accused in the killing of 24-year-old Davion Scott. On a somber night at a gas station located at 13103 Westheimer Road, Scott was found by officers suffering from multiple gunshot wounds, in his vehicle, and was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Per the details of the investigation led by detectives from the HPD Homicide Division, it was deduced that two suspects had exited a blue 1990 Chevrolet Caprice around 11:15 p.m. on the night of the murder. One suspect fired shots at the victim's vehicle while standing near the passenger door of their Caprice. The other, identified as Ponder, approached the driver's side of Scott's car and discharged his weapon at close range, before fleeing eastbound on Westheimer Road with his accomplice.
Ponder's charges were filed on June 13, 2023, after the investigation pinpointed him as one of the shooters. It was only later that Jackquet was identified and consequently charged.
